Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy submitted a proposal to build an offshore wind turbine part facility in New York state, the company announced last month.
The company was one of six offshore wind manufacturers to submit project proposals to the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. The state agency launched a third round of project solicitations last year as part of a $500 million investment in offshore wind ports, manufacturing and supply chain infrastructure.
Siemens Gamesa’s proposed facility would manufacturer nacelle parts, one of the main components in wind turbines that houses gears to turn the blades and a generator. Siemens Gamesa also intends to localize several new component contract manufacturers to support the facility if it wins the bid, including steel component fabrication, bearings and composite components.
The company is designing its facility with flexibility and scalability in mind, a spokesperson told Manufacturing Dive in an email.
“At this point, any figures are preliminary and subject to change based on the requirements of the related projects, U.S. market needs, and our global production footprint,” according to the spokesperson.
Siemens Gamesa’s bid is part of its effort to develop an offshore wind power supply chain along the U.S. East Coast.
The New York facility and supplier network would supply components for all the company’s East Coast offshore wind power projects, according to the release. It noted that a site near Albany, New York, has already been secured for the proposed plant.
While Siemens does not currently have any manufacturing facilities in the region, it is in the process of constructing a rotor blade facility in Virginia.
“The announcement of this proposed facility in New York is a major step forward in our desire to lead the massive U.S. offshore wind market,” said CEO of Siemens Gamesa’s offshore business Marc Becker said in a statement. “We’re excited by the opportunity presented by the State of New York to further develop our manufacturing footprint.”
New York expects to procure up to 4.7 GW of offshore wind energy, bringing its total up to 9 GW through its third round of solicitations, according to the state release. This number makes up a significant portion of the Biden administration’s goal of reaching 30 GW of offshore wind power by 2030.
