Dive Brief:
- Honda recently streamlined its all-terrain vehicle production capacity to make North Carolina the North American home of its lineup, the company announced last week.
- The move is part of a $21.5 million investment in the Swepsonville, North Carolina, facility, where Honda manufactures powersports and power equipment.
- With the investment, the site will also become the first North American Honda facility to produce the company's future electrified powersports and power equipment products.
Dive Insight:
As part of the investment in the North Carolina site, Honda transferred all ATV production from its Timmonsville, South Carolina, facility to Swepsonville. The South Carolina site will now focus exclusively on side-by-side vehicles, the company said.
Honda began ATV production at the Swepsonville site in July 2023 as part of the company's growing focus on powersports products. The 650,000-square-foot facility now represents a $416.5 million capital investment.
The site makes products such as the Honda FourTrax utility ATV series and TRX sport models. It originally opened in 1984 as a lawnmower factory; the company discontinued production of the product segment at the site in September 2023 as part of the transition to ATV manufacturing.
Honda has been facing declining power product sales in North America and Europe, company executives said during a fiscal year Q1 2025 press conference in April. Global unit sales for the business segment were down 16.4% year over year in Q1, according to an investor presentation.
